The Windup Girl - Paolo Bacigalupi

Like several other people in my feed, I have no intention of watching Wimbledon, but even if I did, I doubt I would be able to put down The Windup Girl.

The story takes place in an apocalyptic world after oil had crashed, after the Expansion was finally halted, after the American companies of WeatherAll and SoyPro decided to fight off competition with genetic warfare, after they lost control of the mutations and disease and unleashed pandemic after pandemic upon the planet, after the mutations killed almost every plant in the world. The protagonists are an unlovely group, desperate and selfish and brutal. The plot, too, is still unclear; I don't know where the world, let alone the characters, will end up.

But I do know one thing: I won't be able to put it down.
